The Arts Education Partnership and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities found that students with high levels of arts participation outperform "arts poor" students on virtually every measure.

The Museum Visit

The Hands-On Art Museum's environment is that of an open art studio with original exhibits. Visitors explore a variety of art mediums and materials. Children move from work space to work space at their leisure. Each of the work spaces is full of art, information, and activities.

An art museum for kids, by kids — children have helped to create most of the Museum exhibits.

What separates the Hands-On Art Museum from other museums is that art supplies are available at all times to encourage visitors to create freely. The Museum is staffed with trained personnel who roam the floor and offer gentle coaching and guidance. The one thing we do discourage is "good" clothing.

Exhibits and Work Spaces

Each of the five exhibits focuses on a different aspect of art:

SculptureSculpture Exhibit — Experience form, space, and structure by building sculptures from a variety of recycled materials. Create your masterpieces while you're "under the sea" – an environment created entirely from recycled materials.

Texture and Collage

Texture and Collage — Mounted on the walls of this room are many objects and textures found in everyday life. Make rubbings and then incorporate your textures into a collage.

Color, Shape, and Line — This exhibit introduces the young artist to the basic elements of design. You'll spy with an artist's eye - Wayne Thiebaud, Frank Stella, Henri Matisse, to name a few.

PaintingPainting — Explore painting techniques without the fear of "making a mess." Try painting on different colored and textured papers. Try using a variety of tools – fingers, brushes, sponges, strings, and combs.

Portrait Alley — Look in the mirror and draw what you see. Have your friend sit on one side of the Plexiglas® while you trace your friend's face with markers, and then make a monoprint of your drawing.

Don't miss the Universal Studio where you will find new projects that change monthly!
